"Mi abuelita" - Margarita "Mita" Cuaron
Mi Abuelita was printed in 1988 in the watercolor media. The 12x10 painting is a portrait of the artist's grandmother.10
Due to the colors in the painting being muted and the almost blending of the colors, all sentimentality is erased. The muting and
blending is created by painting a single line of dark color then dragging it into the painting with a brush saturated with water. Among
the artist's interest is painting the rites of passage which are evident in this piece 10.
"Mi abuelita" was chosen for the Family Gallery due to its loss of sentimentality. Because it does not speak directly of the
artists' Abuelita, it allows the observer to view anyone in this picture. While one person might see "Mi abuelita" as his/her Abuela,
another may see herself as an older woman. This painting can be viewed in a number of ways, each conforming to the viewers own
perception of an Abuela. Some may see it as sad, others as a woman content with herself; one's opinion is based on one's experiences
with their own Abuelitas and views of women.
